Traditional design bamboo gazebo

The project was initiated by Mr. Basanta Shrestha, the former Director of ICIMOD, after the 2015 earthquake. He observed that many traditional building materials were being replaced by cement concrete.

The project consisted of several elements, including a rammed earth house, an underground biogas plant, a solar power supply, an organic vegetable garden, and a gazebo with a rammed earth parapet. The latter included a bamboo structure with bamboo purlin and rafter, and mud plaster with mud tile roofing (Traditional Nepali Jhigati).

GBC constructed the bamboo gazebo under the direct supervision of Mr. Krishna Aryal. This construction was an experiment for us, as the roofing material was the heaviest among different materials available in the market. The overall thickness of the roof is 2.5 inches, with the bamboo mat being 0.5 inch, the mud plaster being 2 inches, and the clay tile being 1 inch.
