Bamboo Pagoda Pavilion

The Bamboo Pagoda Pavilion at Akasha Academy in Suntakhan, Gokarneshwor, Kathmandu, is a beautifully crafted meditation center that provides a tranquil space for staff, guests, and visitors. Designed to accommodate up to 40 individuals, the pavilion serves as a versatile venue for meditation, office meetings, seminars, and training programs. Completed on June 15, 2023, the pavilion spans 646 square feet and highlights eco-friendly, sustainable construction using locally sourced natural materials, blending Nepali culture with modern functionality.

This sustainable pavilion is built using a variety of natural materials, including an RCC column structure with metal joints for the foundation, and Bambusa Balcooa (Harauti) and Bambusa Nutan (Mal) bamboo for the main structure. The reused clay tiles on the roof and the flattened bamboo ceiling enhance the natural appeal. The flooring is made from durable Marmoleum, while the foldable wood and bamboo composite doors add functionality. The pavilion also incorporates wattle and daub (Kattar) wall partitions and mud plaster made from a mixture of red mud, cow dung, and husk. The walls are treated with red mud and lime for both aesthetic and environmental benefits, and bamboo elements are coated with touch wood waterproofing paint for added durability.

The innovative design of the pavilion was conceived by Krishna Aryal, a bamboo expert, while the architectural drawings were created by Ar. Bihendra Maharjan of Foresight Architect. Green Bamboo Creation Pvt. Ltd (GBC), known for its expertise in sustainable bamboo construction and eco-friendly building practices, led the project.
