ADB Nepal Outputs, outcome and Impact

Outputs:

  1. Investment potential in bamboo as a high value product for sustainable manufacturing and construction as well as carbon markets demonstration.
  2. National strategic plan for bamboo industries and bamboo supply chain support
  3. Knowledge and capacity build activities for government agencies and industry stakeholder delivered.

Outcome:

  1. Improve the business environment of bamboo enterprises.

Impact: 

  1. Increase nature positive investments and green growth in selected DMCs

Hence, in order to fulfill the above outputs with necessary outcome and impact, ADB organized a workshop on 10 and 11th of April 2025 at Singapore focusing on topic: 

From Root to Revenue: Securing Finance and Sustainable Solutions Through Agroforestry, The case of Bamboo

The representation was from 3 different countries

  1. Philippines 
  2. Indonesia 
  3. Nepal

This platform was created in order to learn from the pilot project execution in the Philippines by ABD and what Nepal and Indonesia can learn from its experiences and vice-versa. 

On the first day (10th of April 2025), the workshop started with the presentation and experience sharing from Co- Founder of BanQu Mr Ashish Gadnis. www.banqu.co

From his session, we got to know about how the blockchain technology can be used in linking the farmers with the vendors or other stakeholders such as banks in order to facilitate in providing all kinds of banking facilities.

Hence, Ashish describes BanQu as a “ True traceability platform with multiple industries platform that helps global brands and manufacturers gain visibility and control over their entire supply chain”. Where companies can trace all their raw materials down to their source with real time data and verifiable proof of who the contributor is in a single platform. This eventually helps the company drive profit and purpose.

The session was followed by InfraBlocks Technology (IBT) Mr. Ashubhomoy Ray and Cedric Joutet both being the Co- Founder of the company. www.infrablockstechnologies.com

They inspire to mitigate and upset the carbon footprint by using the power of innovative digital technology through Carbon Credit Issuance and Tokenization, Carbon footprint management and ESG monitoring to create a carbon neutral world.

There was also a presentation from Dr. Parlindungan Purba, Chairman of Indonesian Green Bamboo Foundation, Rico Jariel Cabangon, Director of Forest Products Research and Development Institute, Department of Science and Technology, Philippines. Mr. Zymar P. Bandola, Senior Technical Officer, Department of Science and Technology (DOST), Philippines. Mr. Arief Rabik, Executive Director of Bamboo Village Trust , Bali Indonesia. 

The representative from Nepal included Director General of Forest Research and Training Center (FRTC) Dr. Mr Rajendra K.C and Founder and Managing Director of Green Bamboo Creation (GBC) Mr. Pranab Pradhan, where we both had a presentation highlighting the development of bamboo sectors in Nepal related to Agriculture and Forestry and Industry and Trade respectively.

On the second day, the venue, location and audience was different and on a larger scale. The key speakers were from Base Bahey Dr. Pablio Jorillo, General Manager, who talked about the affordable bamboo housing using CBFT technology.https://base-builds.com

David Sands/ Founder, Architect and Chief Product Officer of Rhizome Bamboo, www.rhizomebamboo.com talked about how bamboo can replace trees and can be a miracle plant to address climate change and mitigation issues. By developing different bamboo product lines such as bamboo veneers, panels and laminated boards.

Founder and Executive Director of World Bamboo Organization (WBO) Miss Susanne Lucas also shared her work which worked in the area of lobbying, education, research, community coordination and enabling and implementing. She also showed her willingness to organise the International Bamboo Workshop in Nepal, where we are working on the concept design.

Thomas Kessler, Principle Finance Specialist Asian Development Bank, talked about how ADB can play a positive role in helping improve the overall bamboo ecosystem from Plantation, growth, economy and environment. 

The Director Global Programme of International Network for Bamboo and Rattan (INBAR)  Mr. Jay Ramman provided us with the global data of bamboo production, market and its future market possibilities. 

 

We also had an interactive workshop in Building with Bamboo, Financing in Bamboo and Data in Bamboo. All these three parameters were discussed and summarized with the overall objective in finding out the way forward for ADB to make necessary plans and programmers to work in this sector in the days to come. 

Pranab Pradhan talked about the importance of bamboo in Nepal and what are things that need to be addressed to cater the bamboo industry in Nepal including its overall value chain. It was a great opportunity to represent the overall bamboo sector of Nepal and highlight the steps that the private sector, government and other non-government organizations are doing in bring the bamboo as a vital economic contributor.
