Empowering Communities with Bamboo Construction Training in Kalaiya, Bara

Lumanti Support Group for Shelter, a non-governmental organization registered in 1994, is dedicated to alleviating urban poverty in Nepal by improving shelter conditions through an integrated approach. Their mission includes providing housing, sanitation, water supply access, and credit facilities to underserved urban communities. Lumanti focuses on on-site upgrading of settlements, empowering low-income communities to achieve secure tenure and better living conditions.

In partnership with Green Bamboo Creation (GBC), Lumanti conducted a training program for the local community in Kalaiya, Bara, on the sustainable use of bamboo as a construction material. The training covered critical skills such as bamboo treatment with boron compound, bamboo pre-processing, bamboo truss making, mat weaving for ceilings, and CGI roof installation techniques. This hands-on experience equipped the community with the knowledge and confidence to use treated bamboo as a safe, durable, and eco-friendly construction material.

The results of the training were immediate and impactful. The local community developed a keen interest in incorporating treated bamboo into their construction practices. They are now more confident in using bamboo as a viable alternative building material. Following the successful completion of one prototype house, the construction techniques have been replicated for other buildings, helping to promote local bamboo as a sustainable, affordable solution for housing in the region.
