Lumanti Support Group for Shelter- Bamboo Training

Lumanti Support Group for Shelter is a non-governmental organization that was registered in 1994. Its main objective is to alleviate urban poverty in Nepal by improving shelter conditions through an integrated approach. Lumanti provides housing for the urban poor and works towards onsite upgrading of settlements. They also provide secure tenure, support in the construction of housing, improved access to sanitation and water supply, and credit facilities.

The project aimed to provide basic training to the community people of Kalaiya, Bara. The focus of the training was on the importance and use of bamboo, bamboo treatment using boron compound, pre-processing of bamboo, bamboo truss making, and mat weaving for ceiling, truss installation, and CGI roof installation technique.

After the training, the local village community showed more interest in using bamboo for construction. They became more confident in using treated bamboo as a good option for construction and promoting local bamboo as an alternative construction material. One of the prototypes of the house has been done successfully and has been replicated all over other buildings.
